“Home is Where the Charge Is: Identifying consumer preferences for electric vehicle charging decisions” (draft available upon request)
- In this project, I investigate consumers’ incentives to opt in to an electric vehicle (EV) program that incentivizes charging overnight through lower prices. Consumers that opt in appear to adjust their behavior in response to the program, implying that they are cognizant of the cost tradeoff for vehicle charging. I identify changes in consumption at the household level to infer vehicle purchase dates for households that are on the plan, as well as for households that do not join the plan but have similar patterns. I then estimate a model of plan choice given that a household has purchased an EV by using a comparison of the net savings from the plan and the costs of shifting consumption to off-peak periods.
